The 5-Minute Training Session Audit

Before you change the whole plan, find the first thing that changed.

  • 6 places to look
  • About 5 minutes
  • Not a test
  • Your result appears immediately

How to use this

Choose one recent, unedited five-minute clip. For each section, mark what you can actually see. Do not add the numbers – the goal is to find the first place that needs a closer look.

Sudden changes, pain, illness, fear, fatigue, environmental stress, and safety come first. This short review cannot replace a welfare assessment.

0 – Not observed
This change was not visible in the clip.
1 – Once or unclear
It happened once, or the evidence was unclear.
2 – Repeated, or the first clear change
It repeated, or it was the first clear change in the sequence.

Is the learner ready to start or continue?

I could not tell whether the learner was ready, needed more time, or was finished. Staying nearby, taking food, or doing one behavior did not necessarily tell me that the learner wanted to continue.

Can the learner enter and return?

When readiness was clear, the learner still did not join the training or return after food, play, another outcome, or a brief interruption.

Is the behavior built clearly enough?

I could not describe the current step clearly, a needed component was missing, or the learner had to try several responses and guess which one would work.

Did something in my movement or timing change?

My cue, body position, marker, the way I delivered food or another outcome, or the way the next repetition began changed between repetitions.

What happened after the behavior, and what happened next?

After food, play, release, or another outcome, the next repetition changed. The timing, place, or way I delivered it may be worth checking.

Did the behavior break only when I added time?

The behavior itself was clear and consistent, but it changed when I asked it to continue for longer. I was not also increasing distance, repetitions, movement, or environmental difficulty.

If more than one section scored 2

Use the first visible change.

  1. If readiness is unclear, start there. Look at entering and returning only when readiness was already clear.
  2. If the behavior itself or a needed component is unstable, start with how the behavior was built – not with duration.
  3. Choose time only when the behavior was reliable and time was the one thing that changed.
  4. Choose your movement or timing when your actions changed. Choose delivery when the evidence is about what the learner did next.
  5. If you are still unsure, return to the first visible change rather than the biggest-looking error.

Scope: This short review helps you decide what to look at next. It cannot give you a complete training plan or rule out pain, illness, fear, fatigue, or a safety problem.
