Tromplo Field Guide 01

The 5-Minute Training Session Audit

Before you lower criteria, locate the earliest observable divergence.

  • 6 places to look
  • About 5 minutes
  • No score total
  • Your result appears immediately

How to use this

Choose one recent, short, unedited segment. Score only what you can observe. Do not add the scores. Your aim is to choose one primary bottleneck.

Sudden changes, pain, illness, fear, fatigue, environmental stress, and safety come first. This audit does not replace a welfare assessment.

0 – Not observed
This break was not visible in the segment.
1 – Once or unclear
It happened once, or the evidence was unclear.
2 – Repeated, or the first clear break
It repeated, or it was the first clear break in the loop.

The interactive audit could not start. Refresh the page once. If this message remains, contact Tromplo; the scoring form is hidden so it cannot appear to work when the page script is blocked. The printable field guide link also requires the page script and will appear above when it starts correctly.

Readiness and choice

I could not tell whether the learner was ready, “not yet,” or finished. I may have treated staying nearby, taking food, or performing a behavior as enough evidence that they wanted to continue.

Entering and returning

When readiness was clear, the learner still did not enter the interaction reliably or return after reinforcement, a reset, or a brief interruption.

Behavior construction

The target or current criterion was not fully observable, a prerequisite was uncertain, or the learner had to sample different responses and guess which variation would be reinforced.

The trainer’s loop

My cue or antecedent, body position, marker, reinforcer delivery, or reset changed between repetitions or made the next opportunity difficult to read.

What happened after the behavior

The event I called a reinforcer did not strengthen the response as expected, or the type, location, or pattern of delivery systematically changed what the learner did next.

Maintaining behavior through time

The behavior’s form was already reliable, but it broke specifically when I asked it to continue for longer. I was not also increasing distance, repetition, movement, or environmental difficulty.

If more than one section scored 2

Use the earliest observable break.

  1. If readiness or willingness is unclear, choose Readiness and choice. Choose entering only when readiness is already clear.
  2. If form, criteria, or prerequisites are unstable, choose Behavior construction – not duration.
  3. Choose Maintaining behavior through time only when form is reliable and time is the one variable that changed.
  4. Choose The trainer’s loop when handler actions are unclear; choose What happened after the behavior when the evidence concerns what behavior changed next.
  5. If uncertainty remains, return to the first observable break rather than the largest-looking error.

Scope: This is a triage tool, not a complete training plan or welfare assessment. It deliberately does not provide repair sequences, criteria trees, or course protocols.
